Chelyabinsk Meteor Explosion: Largest Asteroid Blast in Over 100 Years

SPACE — On February 15, 2013, a stray asteroid exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia. The shock wave from the explosion damaged thousands of buildings, and injured nearly 1,500 people.

The Chelyabinsk meteor explosion was more powerful than a nuclear bomb, and was so bright that it could eclipse the sun in an instant. Nobody saw the giant space rock coming.

With a diameter of 19 meters and a mass of around 12,000 tons, it was the largest asteroid explosion in more than 100 years. It enters the Earth’s atmosphere at more than 60 times the speed of sound.

Colliding with the upper atmosphere at a shallow angle, it exploded into pieces. Released a shock wave that injured more than 1,500 people and damaged 7,300 buildings.
