Servette took a 0-2 deficit into the second leg of the Conference League playoffs. After Christopher Nkunku scored from the penalty spot for Chelsea, Noni Madueke increased the lead to 2-0 for the Londoners.
The Premier League team lived up to its role as favourites – after the match, it was not the result that caused a stir, but an action by Chelsea’s new signing Marc Guiu. The 18-year-old Spanish talent moved from FC Barcelona to London for six million euros this summer and made his first appearance in the starting eleven against Servette – he came off the bench in the season opener against Manchester City last weekend.
Shortly after Chelsea’s 1-0 penalty, Guiu had his first goal and the 2-0 on his feet. After a back pass, Servette goalkeeper Jérémy Frick tried to clear the ball, but was caught by the onrushing Spaniard. He then had all the time in the world to put the ball in the goal, but played it straight to the rushing Frick. Guiu was also unable to capitalize on the rebound that followed.
According to rumours, Chelsea want to loan Guiu to another club. However, he is still fighting for a regular place under Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. His performance against Servette in his second competitive match did not exactly advertise his own cause and drew ridicule from fans. “Nice to see Chelsea have solved their finishing problems with Guiu” and “Marc Guiu… is this a joke?” can be read on Twitter.
Despite Guiu’s mistake, Chelsea won the match against Servette 2-0 and created a good starting position for the return match in Geneva next Thursday. (kat)
