LONDON (AP) — A Chelsea decimated by injuries did not find the necessary bit of luck and ended up settling for a 0-0 draw on Sunday against Bournemouth to remain at the bottom of the Premier League table, the same area where last season ended.
Chelsea shook Bournemouth’s goal twice and Raheem Sterling hit the crossbar with a free kick in the 51st minute, with the ball hitting just inside the goal line. Although defender Levi Colwill pushed the ball out of the net, the score was disallowed for offside.
Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez rescued the point for the team led by Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino with his intervention in the 79th to repel a shot from Dominic Solanke, the Bournemouth striker who began his career at the London club.
A day after two Premier League games were decided by goals in stoppage time, Bournemouth and Chelsea could not find a goal in the extra eight minutes at the end of the second half.
Chelsea has just one victory in five games to sit 14th in the table, one step behind Manchester United and one ahead of a Bournemouth team that has not yet won this season.
Pochettino missed Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo, captain Reese James and attacker Christopher Nkunku due to injuries. Despite spending $1 billion on transfers over the last year, Pochettino had to turn to teenagers from the youth team.
