Chelsea’s Defeat Against Middlesbrough in League Cup Semi-Finals

Jan 9, 2024 at 11:03 PM Update: 2 hours ago

Chelsea did a poor job in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Tuesday. In the first leg of a diptych, the Londoners lost 1-0 to Championship club Middlesbrough, where Dutchman Rav van den Berg was in the starting line-up.

After 37 minutes of football, the party started at the Middlesbrough Stadium. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill made a mistake, after which Hayden Hackney shot in coolly and calmly. Chelsea had an excellent opportunity to reduce the deficit before half-time, but Cole Palmer fired the rebound over from close range.

Former PSV striker Noni Madueke was one of the strongest players on the field at Chelsea. After a fierce attack, he forced a chance for the equalizer, but his cross just flew over his emerging teammates. In the final phase, substitute Raheem Sterling was also close to making it 1-1 on a pass from Armando Broja, but the attacker could not get his shoe on the ball.

At Middlesbrough, nineteen-year-old Rav van den Berg was in the starting line-up. Van den Berg and trainer Michael Carrick can be proud of their team after the narrow win. The current number twelve in the Second Division is looking forward to the return at Chelsea, number ten in the Premier League, with a victory in his pocket. That match is scheduled for January 23.

In the final at Wembley, Middlesbrough or Chelsea will face Liverpool or Fulham. Those teams will play the first game of their diptych on Wednesday at Anfield.
