Chelsea Wolfe Returns with Heavier and Muscular Atmospheres on She Reaches Out to She – Album Review

It has been almost 5 years since the release of Birth of Violence. Chelsea Wolfe has not been inactive between the two, since she also participated in a project with Converge. It must be said that in the meantime, there was also great turmoil at Sargent House which led to his departure and Wolfe made the decision to become sober. After an album which leaned more into her folk side, the great lady of gothic is back to heavier and muscular atmospheres on She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She. We return to the sounds of Hiss Spun et Abyss and the themes of personal growth and big change.

The title itself means: the past which tends towards the present in order to tend towards the future. An allegory of the need for change and the importance of finding a direction to better evolve. All of this terribly evokes the major romantic changes that can turn your life upside down. One thing is sure, Chelsea Wolfe dives back into heavier music to evoke these emotions. The gothic side of his music returns to what it was several years ago and it suits him well. His rather high-pitched voice with its languorous tone thrives in this kind of atmosphere.

Whispers in the Echo Chamber which appeared before the release and which opens the album is a good example. It’s squeaky and heavy with sounds of industrial music which are very present. Chelsea Wolfe is sometimes very powerful with her voice, but also takes on whispering tones to sing to us confidences that resonate with the general theme of the album.

If the industrial sounds were very present on this first song, it mixes with trip-hop grooves on Tunnel Lights. Moreover, from this moment on the album, the heaviness fades to delve further into vaporous sounds. The Liminal is still a little muscular in its chorus and counts on beautiful sound textures. Eyes Like Nightshade is, subsequently, very dynamic and uses sound glitches, but abandons the striking force in favor of an ethereal atmosphere. It only continues with Salt on which Chelsea Wolfe demonstrates how effective his unadorned voice is. She is a very good melodist who always seeks outside the agreed frameworks. Then with Unseen World et Dusk which ends the album, we regain a little heaviness and sonic grandeur.

She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She bring it back Chelsea Wolfe that we love with gothic sounds and dark atmospheres. She uses this darkness to exhume the great emotions that inhabit her and process them through convincing melodies. Musically, Chelsea Wolfe still remains in its comfort zones, which is surprising given the general theme of the album which is so focused on evolution. She doesn’t push the envelope of the world she created, but it’s still terribly effective.
