Chelsea have been warned they risk finding themselves in the same situation as Mo Salah or Kevin De Bruyne if they sell Mykhailo Mudryk.
Mudryk signed for the Blues from Shakhtar Donetsk in January for a fee of £88.5 million and made a promising debut against Liverpool at Anfield.
However, the 22-year-old has struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge and is yet to score his first goal for the club in 23 appearances.
But Chelsea legend Pat Nevin is convinced the Ukrainian has the qualities to become a top player and believes his former club must be careful with him given the situation in his home country.
Mudryk, who now wears number 10, received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Raheem Sterling in the 68th minute in his last outing against Brighton.
The impressive performance was enough for Nevin to argue that Mudryk could follow Salah and De Bruyne in rebuilding their careers away from west London should Chelsea lose patience.
“Mykhailo Mudryk is phenomenal and will get better. Chelsea cannot risk him becoming another Salah or De Bruyne,” the 6-year-old told OLBG,
“There is a reason why Arsenal wanted Mudryk: he is phenomenal. This is why Arsenal wanted Mudryk, he is phenomenal. His speed is ridiculous, as are his skills.
“He had different problems than everyone else because he was a Ukrainian boy coming to a new country.
“There was also a big transfer fee hanging over him, although the pressure has eased a bit since Chelsea paid other fees.
“I think he has the potential to become a great striker and a great creator.
“He came to a team that wasn’t playing well, but he didn’t make it easy for himself. His numbers last season weren’t good.
Mudryk is blessed with impressive abilities, such as frightening speed and dribbling, but he has not been able to convert them into goals.
He arrived at a struggling Chelsea side midway through last season, having been heavily linked with Arsenal.
And Nevin is pleading with the club to be patient, given the recent history of players ‘failing’ only to return to a different environment.
He added: “Chelsea know better than anyone that if you let a player go, he can become world class elsewhere.
“It arrived in January, a difficult time for the players. It’s early in the season and I still have high hopes for Mudryk when the team gets going.
“It could happen later this season or next season. If Chelsea part ways with their player, it would not be surprising to see him shine elsewhere.”
Chelsea finally returned to winning ways against Brighton thanks to a goal from Nicolas Jackson, which allows them to qualify for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup against Blackburn Rovers.
They face Fulham in a west London derby on Monday at Craven Cottage.
