After securing a draw following a four-goal thriller against relegation-threatened Burnley, who played the entire second half with ten men, Chelsea face the Red Devils in midweek, in the hope of returning to victory. Chelsea v Manchester United kick off at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday April 4 at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea in difficulty despite numerical superiority and lack of team commitment
Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by 10-man Burnley last weekend, having surrendered the lead twice despite having a numerical superiority throughout the second half. Mauricio Pochettino attacked his players during the post-match interview. “I’m upset and disappointed. It’s more (the points in the heart and head) than in the legs,” he said, suggesting a lack of commitment from his team. The Blues (GNNGN), who have not won in their last 12 Premier League matches against Manchester United (0G, 7N, 5L), remained in 11th place with 40 points (11G, 7N, & 10P) after the draw. This is the longest series without a victory in the league against the Red Devils. Additionally, Chelsea’s bad luck in April could leave the Blues winless. The Blues have not won in their last six Premier League matches in April (0G, 2D, 4L) since their 1-0 victory against West Ham in 2022. Mauricio Pochettino is expected to deploy a 4-2-3 -1 with Nicolas Jackson in attack. Cole Palmer, scorer of a double against Burnley, remains the club’s top scorer and best passer, with 13 goals and 8 assists, representing a 43% participation in Chelsea’s total 49 goals.
Manchester United looking for back-to-back wins against Chelsea
Manchester United are in 6th place in the Premier League table with 48 points (15G, 3D, & 11P) after the 1-1 draw against Brentford this weekend. This draw leaves Erik ten Hag’s team 11 points out of the top 4 before Thursday’s trip to the capital. The Red Devils (GPPGN) will not only be looking to overtake Chelsea in the Premier League for only the second time, having done so in the 2019-20 campaign, but also make it three straight PL wins against the Blues.
This would make it three straight league wins over Chelsea for the first time since September 1965. Additionally, Manchester United are unbeaten in their last five visits to Stamford Bridge, although four of those have ended in a draw (1G, 4N, 0P). However, Manchester United have won just one of their last nine Premier League away matches against London teams (1G, 3D, 5P). A 4-2-3-1 with Rasmus Højlund in attack is expected for this midweek match against Chelsea.
