Chelsea Struggle in Premier League: Mauricio Pochettino Refuses to Change Team’s Management Style

You probably imagined it completely differently. Mauricio Pochettino (51) did not start his engagement at Chelsea ideally. After Sunday’s goalless draw with Bournemouth, his team are already abysmal 10 points behind leaders Manchester City, and with just one win, they are languishing in 14th place in the table. The Argentine understands the fans’ frustration, but refuses to change the team’s management style.

Chelsea’s bad form was also reflected in Sunday’s duel in Bournemouth, where the Blues, just like at the beginning of the month with Nottingham Forrest, failed to score a goal. Thanks to solid defending and the performance of goalkeeper Roberto Sánchez, they at least got a point for the 0-0 draw.

Chelsea are 14th in the Premier League table with five points from five matches. The traditional London club is having a rough time despite having spent around $1 billion on transfers since May 2022, when new owners led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed the takeover of the club.

“The fans know that if you invest money, which is talked about a lot in the media, there are expectations,” Pochettino said after the match. “If you are not winning, it is normal that the fans are not happy,” added the Argentine.

The former coach of Tottenham and PSG is troubled by a malaise at the start of the new season. “I can tell the fans that there are circumstances that we cannot change. We have too many players who are not available,” complained Pochettino.

His team is really plagued by numerous absences. Defender Marc Cucurella, winger Noni Madueke and record signing Moises Caicedo missed Sunday’s game, joining a long injury list that includes Reece James, Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia.

“We have extraordinary faith but unlucky. We have 12 injured players, joined by Cucurella, Madueke and Caicedo,” added Pochettino. “Am I going to cry or complain? No, I have to accept this challenge and stay positive. We are not going to change the way we do things,” concluded the Blues skipper from the new season.
