LONDON —
Christopher Nkunku, the recently signed striker for Chelsea, could miss the start of the Premier League season after picking up an injury in the last game of a pre-season tour of the United States.
The French international was substituted midway through the first half of a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago on Wednesday collapsing on the pitch and touching his leg.
“He felt something in his knee,” Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said. “The doctors are examining him and I hope it’s nothing serious.”
“We are confident that he can rejoin the team soon. We need a few days to evaluate him”, added the Argentine coach.
Nkunku, who joined from Leipzig after paying 52 million pounds ($67 million), was a regular starter in Chelsea’s pre-season.
If the beginning of the season is lost, the door would be opened for another reinforcement — Nicolas Jackson, ex-Villarreal — up front.
Chelsea will open the Premier season at home against Liverpool on August 13.
