Timo Werner could become a target for Bayern Munich if they lose Robert Lewandowski or fail to sign Erling Haaland next summer, according to reports in Germany.
Werner received large tips when he arrived at Chelsea from RB Leipzig last summer. However, the transfer has not really worked for him. His debut season goals and assists were respectable, but not at the level Chelsea thought they were paying for.
They resisted the idea of cutting their losses to him after just a year, but if their struggles continue, a transfer may be considered next summer. In fact, a suitor is already becoming a clear candidate to sign you.
According to Sport1, Bayern Munich have a 70 percent chance of signing Werner next year. In fact, he is in “regular contact” with his coach Julian Nagelsmann, who previously brought out the best in him in Leipzig.
The new Bayern manager has already met with a couple of players he worked with at his old club. Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer followed him to the Allianz Arena this summer, viz. Although Werner has strayed for Chelsea, he too could make a similar move next year.
Following the club’s record incorporation of Romelu Lukaku into the Chelsea attack this summer, Werner is not a guaranteed starter. Even before Lukaku returned, German was not the obvious first choice. But he’s still scoring goals internationally, scoring in Germany’s two games at the current break so far, and could choose to continue his club career in his home country.
The only obstacle for Bayern would be their annual salary of 15 million euros. Also, a move would depend on what happens to Lewandowski or Haaland.
Lewandowski has established himself as one of the best players in the world during his time at Bayern. However, he keeps the idea of a new challenge elsewhere in the back of his mind. If it goes, they would need a suitable replacement.
The dream solution would be Haaland, whose scoring record for Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund has been phenomenal. The Norwegian international will be the subject of a transfer fight next summer, when a release clause will be active in his contract.
Bayern have built a dynasty by plucking the best talent from their rivals in their league, so I could aim to repeat that strategy with Haaland.
But there will be several rivals for his signature, while there may be a clearer and cheaper path to Werner.
Furthermore, Werner is represented by the same agency as Nagelsmann, Upamecano and another Bayern player, Niklas Sule. They may well be pushing it towards Bavaria.
The update on the Chelsea player concludes with a report on seven German internationals that Bayern may be looking to sign. Kai Havertz, Werner’s teammate at Chelsea, is also mentioned, but he’s only given a five percent chance of making a transfer. On the other hand, of the septet, Werner is the one who qualifies with the highest probability of signing for the Bundesliga champions.
However, it is clear that there are conditions that should exist beforehand. Also, he has plenty of time to change his Chelsea form if given the chance.
His contract at Stamford Bridge will run until 2025.
Werner rejected Chelsea’s departure in summer
Chelsea lost a pair of forwards over the summer to make room for Lukaku. Tammy Abraham joined Roma and Olivier Giroud also moved to Italy with AC Milan.
But Werner remained in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, despite having an Italian fan of his own.
Bild journalist Christian Falk revealed that Inter Milan showed interest in Werner to fill his void in the form of Lukaku.
However, Werner decided to stay in London and fight for his place in the blue jersey.
Therefore, he hopes he can steal some playtime from Lukaku, or potentially play alongside him.
But if things don’t improve much in the coming months, an exit may be back on the 25-year-old’s agenda.
