Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has already laid the groundwork for a Harry Kane transfer – At issue

Will Harry Kane leave Tottenham and where? This is once again the question that arises as the summer transfer window approaches, but Chelsea are arguably the team that have best laid the groundwork to achieve this. Chelsea fans have had a frustrating season throughout Todd Boehly’s first 12 months in charge.

Nearly £600million was spent on new players, which left many Premier League rivals flabbergasted. It hasn’t worked out on the pitch so far, with Graham Potter replacing Thomas Tuchel at the start of the campaign.

But it’s easy to see where Chelsea have struggled the most this season, with their forwards unable to find their shooting boots. Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling are the only two players to score more than three goals, but the attacking pair have only netted seven each in all competitions.

Part of Potter’s problem is finding his top three strikers, week after week, when there are so many. After the arrivals of Joao Felix, Noni Madueke, David Datro Fofana and Mykahlo Mudryk in January, Potter found himself with 10 forwards at his disposal.

Fofana is expected to be loaned out this summer, while Felix may not be signed permanently. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been brought in to fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku’s loan move to Inter Milan, but the former Arsenal striker is no longer popular under Potter.

Despite all their attacking options, Chelsea are still lacking a true number 9 in midfield. The foundations of a formidable offensive unit are already there, only the last piece is missing and Kane would probably be the best option.

Tottenham will have to fight to keep Kane at the club this summer, with Antonio Conte’s future also in doubt. Kane has just over a year left on his contract and Tottenham won’t want to risk losing their superstar for nothing in 2024.

Manchester United are heavily linked with the England captain and could have the financial wherewithal to complete a deal if a full Qatar takeover is completed before the end of the season. But Chelsea have already shown under Boehly that they aren’t afraid to spend big bucks to bring in the man they want.

The absence of the Champions League could be Chelsea’s only problem in the transfer negotiations this summer. But they already have the foundations in place with their team to be a real contender for next season with the right planning in place.

Lukaku’s future could be intrinsically linked to that of Chelsea, who could potentially buy the Belgium international to help fund Kane’s transfer. Other strikers will also need to be sold to free up space in Potter’s squad, but Kane would be the missing link to help realize the true potential of Chelsea’s squad.
