Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich. None of these clubs is willing to pay in cash, even with the possibility of resorting to the mechanism factoring – the 75 million euros included in the current termination clause for Diogo Costa.
It is the amount demanded by Pinto da Costa to release the economic rights of the jewel in the crown of the squad guided by Sérgio Conceição, but SAD, in the face of the absence of high proposals, intends to assume the risk that in the second half of the Financial Year and Accounts referring to 2022 /2023 there is a loss. It’s a paradigm shift, this after Fernando Gomes went public and revealed that FC Porto would obligatorily have to make 50 million euros in capital gains by Friday.
Despite the imminent risk of the club again breaching UEFA’s financial ‘fair-play’ rules, which determines that the balance of the last three years does not amount to five million euros.
Jorge Mendes, agent of Diogo Costa and mandated by Pinto da Costa to transfer the player to the Premier League, has so far not managed to convince both Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich to deposit 75 million euros in the coffers portistas.
In the first half of the season that ended now, the dragons already showed a loss of 9.891 million euros, which is why they cannot go beyond a deficit amount in 2022/2023 of 45 million euros in total.
There is no doubt, therefore, that the blue and white officials will have to devise a financial plan that will allow them not to cross the line drawn by UEFA, otherwise they will suffer serious consequences, which, depending on the amounts involved, may involve more than one simple fine.
But it seems that the top management is fully aware of the reality and the inherent risks it is currently running, but is determined not to see its human heritage squandered, leaving Sérgio Conceição’s team without its main weapons and, in this specific case, reference.
EXECUTIVE PLAN?
There is, even so, a natural concern in the SAD offices, as most understand that it is necessary to make at least one considerable sale that allows the financial situation to be more relieved and makes it possible to look to the immediate future in terms of liquidity with some margin of security.
One thing is certain: Pinto da Costa was always peremptory in the various public interventions he had, assuring FC Porto members and fans that he would never sell below the termination clauses. It remains to be seen whether the club’s economic situation allows it to fulfill what it has said publicly.
