Recruited last season and then loaned to Porto, Malang Sarr hopes to be able to find a place in the Chelsea squad.
Malang Sarr admits he’s still ‘surprised’ to be a Chelsea player, having been signed by the Blues as a free player in 2020, but the 22-year-old is determined to make his way with the heavyweights of the Premier League.
Interest in the up-and-coming defender has grown steadily last summer, with clubs across Europe giving him admiring glances.
Chelsea eventually stepped in to strike a deal on the wire, before sending him on loan to Porto’s side. A year later, the Frenchman assures us that this move to London happened unexpectedly.
Sarr spoke on Chelsea’s official website of an opportunity too good to pass up: “I was training alone, I was training at home and I was waiting.”
“I had spent almost six months without playing [après avoir vu la Ligue 1 fermée au milieu de la pandémie de coronavirus], and when my agent told me about this opportunity to come here to Chelsea, I was surprised and happy. ”
“It was a great opportunity for me. He told me about a loan for the first year and for me that was a good idea. ”
“I hadn’t played for a long time and I needed to have rhythm, to play and to have a good experience too, to accelerate after Nice and come back stronger and ready to go.”
Can Sarr shine at Chelsea?
The promising prospect is still waiting to make his competitive debut for the Blues, but he made 19 appearances for Porto last season, accumulating Champions League experience along the way.
Chelsea went all the way to the title in this completion last season, beating Manchester City, and Sarr is determined to help Thomas Tuchel’s side retain their titles and win others.
