Chelsea are looking for a new striker and according to the Evening Standard, the club has made an inquiry to Sporting about Viktor Gyökeres, 25.
The Swedish national team striker has scored 18 goals in 21 games for Sporting and his performances have attracted the attention of several top clubs in Europe. However, there are those who are skeptical that Gyökeres actually has what it takes to play in the biggest teams.
Glen Johnson, who has represented both Chelsea and Liverpool, is one of them. He even advises “The Blues” not to go after the Swede.
– I think it is a signing that Chelsea should avoid. There are not many players who can play in the Championship one season and then play for one of the Premier League’s biggest teams the following season, Johnson told the GGRecon.com site.
– If he was good enough, then he would have scored 35 goals in one season in the Championship and shown that he was miles ahead of everyone else. But he didn’t.
Johnson continues his reasoning:
– In Sporting, he plays in a league that is easier than the Premier League. And yes, I realize he scores a lot. But I definitely think there are several question marks surrounding him.
A sale in January will only happen if Chelsea are ready to activate the 25-year-old’s buyout clause of 100 million euros (roughly SEK 1.1 billion). Sporting’s head coach Rubén Amorim has announced this.
Gyökeres joined Sporting from Coventry last summer and has a contract until 2028.
