It therefore remains at the foot of the podium, tied with Arsenal and Villa (18 points). While waiting for the arrival of their new coach Ruben Amorim during the next break, the Manchester United players, guided by Ruud Van Nistelrooy, did not have control but were able to resist and exploit the flaws left by Chelsea.
Unsurprisingly, Enzo Maresca’s Blues had control of the game, but had difficulty creating big chances, despite some flashes from Cole Palmer. If Noni Madueke found the post with a header from a corner (14th), in an action where he first pushed Casemiro, the other best situations before the break were Mancunian. Bruno Fernandes did not find the target after a festival from Marcus Rashford (22nd), then the two men exchanged roles, when Rashford placed a recovery on the bar (45th + 2), on an opening from the Portuguese.
In difficulty against Rashford, the Frenchman Malo Gusto was replaced at the break, and the pace dropped a little. A slightly too cross strike from Pedro Neto (55th) stirred up the debates a little, but it was MU who opened the scoring. After a big miss from Alejandro Garnacho (65th), Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty offered by Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez (see below, 70th). Chelsea, however, quickly reacted with the equalizer from the omnipresent Moises Caicedo (74th, see below).
The player: Caicedo rewarded
After celebrating his 23rd birthday on Saturday, Moises Caicedo gave himself a nice gift at Old Trafford. While the Blues were trailing, the Ecuadorian midfielder equalized with a superb volley, following a corner from Cole Palmer pushed back by Casemiro (74th). Accustomed to remarkable achievements, such as his strike from midfield at the end of last season, Caicedo was rewarded for his impressive display in midfield (8 duels won), where he formed a muscular duo with Roméo Lavia. Sometimes at the limit in terms of aggressiveness, he got Chelsea out of a bad situation.
The fact: Robert Sanchez’s mistake
While Chelsea fans are divided on Robert Sanchez’s start to the season, criticizing him in particular for a footwork that could largely be improved, the Spanish goalkeeper clearly did not score a point at Old Trafford. Already not very comfortable when pushing a cross from Rashford into the feet of Fernandes (22nd), the former Brighton player caused the penalty to open the score for Manchester United. In a bad reflex, he went to catch the foot of Rasmus Hojlund, who was nevertheless very off-center. He was caught on the wrong foot on Fernandes’ penalty (70th).
