The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is making a bold move by rebranding garden weeds as “hero plants” ahead of its upcoming event. In fact, a third of the show gardens this year will feature resilient “superweeds” such as brambles, thistles, and knapweed. The renowned gardening charity is urging households to stop using the derogatory term “weeds” and instead recognize their value as advisers and friends. Sheila Das, garden manager at RHS Wisley in Surrey, even stated that “Your weed is your adviser. It’s your friend.” Tom Massey at the Royal Entomological Society added that dandelions, for example, are rocket fuel for bees and add beauty to a garden. The show will take place from 23rd – 27th May 2023 at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and in a nod to sustainable gardening, clear plans must be in place for the post-show plants, flowers, and structures.
