Chelsea are falling short of their Premier League ambitions and the problem runs deeper than a striker problem.
The big English clubs are in trouble. Liverpool lost at Brentford on Monday. But Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea also dropped points last weekend. Chelsea are missing a striker of Lukaku’s caliber according to SkySports analysts.
The London team let go of Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, no immediate replacements could be found. New manager Graham Potter has inherited this problem caused by the previous owners and Thomas Tuchel. The question therefore arises on Sky: “Is this team better off without Lukaku?”. However, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank believes strikers aren’t Chelsea’s only flaw. “I don’t think that’s the only problem,” he said. “It’s not just the forwards who score goals. The midfielders can also take that responsibility. They don’t create enough chances.”
For the former Stamford Bridge forward, the club has also been unlucky with injuries. “They’ve lost important players like Reece James, N’Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell… Everything weighs on them,” he echoed. “Graham Pottter needs time. He has nothing to build this team. On the other hand, Chelsea cannot live a year without the Champions League.”
