Chelsea reached an agreement to incorporate the Mexican Bernardo Cueva to its coaching staff as a coach specialized in set pieces, according to reports from The Athletic. The technician is expected to join the team Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the current season.
The 36-year-old advisor is recognized for his role at Brentford, since his arrival in September 2020, when he was hired as a tactical statistician from Chivas. His contribution stands out especially for the team’s success in the Premier Leaguewhere they were promoted for the first time in May 2021.
The Mexican was recruited by the football director of ‘The Bees’, Phil Giles. Since then, the London team has remained solid in the top category of the english soccerstanding out for his effectiveness in set pieces, Cueva’s area of specialty.
Chelsea identified the Mexican advisor as the main candidate for the position of set-piece coach, which became vacant since the departure of Anthony Barry to the Bayern Munich last April. His hiring is seen as a significant blow to the Blues.

Mauricio Pochettino, the Chelsea coach, supports the incorporation of Bernardo Cueva to the team and according to the international media, the strategist says he is enthusiastic about the potential he will bring. The Mexican coach’s transition from one west London club to another will be completed this summer, after ending his commitment to the Brentford.
Bernardo Cueva is also a member of the Council of Experts of the Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF), where he contributes his experience in the area of sports intelligence to support the coach Jaime Lozano in the Mexican National Team.
His professional career includes a spell with Chivas in Liga MX before making the leap to Europe with Brentford in the Championship, where he was part of the team’s historic promotion to the Premier League. In addition, he provided his services to the Norway national team between 2021 and 2022.
