Madrid –
President LaLiga, Javier Tebas, accusing Chelsea of cheating. The accusations related to the awarding of player contracts.
This was stated by Tebas in a press conference on Friday (17/3) local time. The LaLiga boss has highlighted the new Chelsea signing’s long-term contracts.
“Chelsea is clearly cheating by giving a contract of up to eight to nine years,” said Tebas.
Since being owned by Todd Boehly and his consortium, Chelsea has changed its financial strategy, especially in player contracts. Apart from being bought expensively, new players like Wesley Fofana to Enzo Fernandez were given contracts of more than five years.
This season, Chelsea has poured out more than 600 million pounds to recruit dozens of new players. However, many of his players were given long-term contracts, which turned out to be Chelsea’s strategy to balance its balance sheet.
By giving a long-term contract, the burden of the player’s transfer fee will be shared over the duration of the contract. For example, Enzo Fernandez was redeemed for 120 million euros with a contract that lasted eight and a half years, then Chelsea only needed to spend around 14 million euros per season to sign him.
That tactic is called financial amortization. It is also this method that keeps Chelsea away from Financial Fair Play rules, because the Blues avoid the total transfer fee as a whole.
