Inspections have begun in Burgas for the high prices of basic foodstuffs. They are carried out by three agencies – the Commission for Consumer Protection, the NRA and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency. Their purpose is to determine whether there is a speculum. The inspections began just days after the cabinet announced it would crack down on unfair trading practices.
The inspection started from a large chain of grocery stores in Burgas.
“During the period from February 15 to March 31, we are starting a campaign to monitor the announced prices, promotional offers, how discounts are announced and whether the Law on Consumer Protection is being followed,” commented the inspector from the KZP-Burgas Kristina Kasabova to Bulgaria ON AIR.
According to the women behind the counter, the price of meat has risen the least, unlike dairy products.
“Cheese is already fetching BGN 30 per kilogram. More meat is bought than dairy products,” they noted. Their colleagues who sell dairy products are adamant that there is specula.
“There can be a violation when one price is announced, and upon payment the user finds out that the value is completely different and inflated,” added Kasobova.
