Cheers for rain showers in Eastern Norway – but soon it will be dry again – VG

The marina in Røykenvik was almost completely dried up at the beginning of May.

– Oh, it’s raining, happy people exclaimed in the streets of Oslo on Friday. In some places in Eastern Norway, there has been so much rain that it helps with the drought, says a meteorologist.

But there are big local differences, so in some places østafjells it is still as dry as before Friday’s building weather. The rainy weather will probably continue into the evening and night until Saturday.

– There are some places that help a little on the drought, while in other places it is just as dry. It has helped overall both in terms of the risk of forest fires and in terms of the drought otherwise, says on-duty meteorologist Per Egil Haga at the Meteorological Institute to NTB.

Here you can see how the weather will be May 17

It is very dry in several places in Eastern Norway.

He says in some places østafjells receives 5 millimeters of precipitation and more. But the meteorologist also has a cold shower for rain-soaked easterners.

Water crisis and drought

– It is too small for it to be sufficient. Neither to remove the danger of forest fires nor to bring about any really good growth in the soil or the reservoirs, says Haga.

There has been a water crisis in several places in Norway due to little rain and little melt water from the mountains. There are still dry times ahead.

– We need more. There have been small sprinkles and showers locally here and there, but it seems a little too small, says Haga.

In other parts of the country you can toast in fresh rainwater.

– In some places it has helped quite well. Then we have to go to Western Norway and further north, where it is not so critical anymore after the recent rainfall, says Haga.

Low pressure builds up

– Are there better times ahead?

– Not here in southern Norway. Here we are moving towards a high-pressure build-up and this leads to us entering a dry period again. This also applies to Western Norway and Trøndelag, says Haga.

– For the East Fjords, we do not really expect any precipitation on Saturday or the next few days, he adds.

Next week, it looks like a new low pressure will come in. It may mean rain in Western Norway from the middle of next week, and hopefully a little also in the eastern mountains later this week.

– It is not as obvious that there will be a lot of precipitation here, but there is a possibility for the end of next week.
