Baku. The Mexican Sergio Czech Red Bull’s Pérez had a strong performance on the first day of free practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, finishing second behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc of Monaco.
Leclerc, winner two weeks ago at Monza, beat Sergio Pérez by just six thousandths of a second in the second practice session, after he had performed well from the first practice session, having finished third.
British driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) set the third fastest time in the second practice session, just 0.66 seconds behind the Monegasque driver, which gives an idea of the equality between the top finishers.
Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) were the other two drivers able to complete the lap on the streets of the Azerbaijani capital in under one minute and 44 seconds.
Leclerc achieved the time despite having suffered a spectacular accident in the first session and spending part of the second in the garage while his mechanics tried to resolve some problems with the red car.
The two top title contenders did not have the best of days: leader Max Verstappen, Perez’s teammate at Red Bull, had been fastest in the first session but in the second practice he was sixth, more than half a second behind Leclerc. The British Lando Norris (McLaren) finished in 17th place, more than a second and a half behind the Monegasque.
