Numismatics is one of the most common practices in collecting and there are those who keep real jewels in coins and banknotes. Well, those treasure hunters they could pay you up to 2,000 euros if you have one of the coins from a series of 500 made in Lithuania with a flaw.

The countries of the European Union with a single currency have the possibility of manufacturing several units of two different versions to mark or commemorate dates or special events in their country. As well, the Central Bank of Lithuania decided to create, in 2021, a batch of half a million coins dedicated to the Zuvintas Biosphere Reserve.

The coin error

The thing is, in that batch, there was a manufacturing error in 500 units that we can see on the edge of the coin. The valuable ones have three words engraved: “Laisvé, Vienybé, Gerové” (“freedom, unity, well-being), which are actually the words that belong to the coins of Latvia. What you should put in Lithuanian is “Dievs, Sveti, Latviju” (“God Bless Latvia”).

This change makes the coin appreciate in value and has become the target of many collectors who have already launched offers of up to 2,000 euros for one of them, which, although Visual Numismatics does not give it much reliability, it does highlight that there could be other similar ones. So, look to see if you have it in your possession because you could be in for a surprise.

The list of two-euro coins that could have a higher value is long, although in Spain the most revalued does not reach a price beyond 6 euros and dates from 2009.

The Lithuanian Mint has apologized for the resulting situation. The Bank of Lithuania apologizes for the mistake and reminds that numismatic items sold by the Bank of Lithuania are guaranteed for 2 years calculated from the date of purchase, so, wrong coins could be returned. But of course, taking into account what they can pay for them, who would want to return it?
