When measuring blood pressure, people can place their hand incorrectly and this leads to incorrect data, according to a new study reported by UPI. The research was conducted by scientists from Johns Hopkins University.

“Patients need to be careful both when measuring their own blood at home and when a doctor does it,” said lead study author Dr. Tammy Brady, vice chair for research clinical in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan.Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The new study looked at the effect of three arm positions during blood pressure measurement – resting on a desk, on the lap and hanging on the side.

The study found that the hand on the lap as well as being relaxed to the side increased systolic blood pressure.

According to the scientists, the blood pressure cuff should be placed at heart level on the arm that is lying on a desk or table.

In addition, the researchers found that doctors often measured blood pressure while patients were sitting with little arm support.

For the purposes of the study, 133 people aged 18 to 80 were examined. Participants were randomly assigned to six groups, each varying the order of the three seated arm positions. Their blood was measured three times in the three sitting positions. Between each set, they walk for two minutes and rest for five minutes.

The researchers found that the measurements obtained with the hand in the lap or hanging at the side were significantly higher than those obtained with the hand resting on a desk, as recommended.

The results were published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, BTA writes.
