Check WHO’s Latest Recommendations for Sinovac Vaccine Users

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The World Health Organization (WHO) urges residents who use inactivated Covid-19 vaccines such as the Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines to get a booster vaccine or a third dose.

The recommendation was released after the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) for immunization held a meeting some time ago. Especially to evaluate the need for a Covid-19 vaccine booster.

To note, the inactivated vaccine itself uses a method by taking the SARS-CoV-2 virus, then killing it using chemicals, heat or radiation. This is one of the most popular methods used by the healthcare world to make vaccines.

The recommendation does not mention in detail the name of the vaccine. However, there are two types of inactivated vaccines that received an emergency use listing (EUL) from the WHO, namely the Sinovac vaccine called CoronaVac and the Sinopharm vaccine named BBIBP-CorV.

SAGE chairman Alejandro Cravioto said the vaccine provided a strong level of protection against severe disease. At least for the next six months, although data suggest immunity to severe disease is reduced in the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

“At this time we continue to support the need for even distribution (of the vaccine) and the use of the third dose only in those who have health problems or people who have received inactivated vaccines,” said Alejandro Cravioto, as quoted by Reuters on Monday (13/6/2022).
