NEW YORK — A penthouse steeped in history and with a long list of famous owners is for sale in New York City.
The historic building known as the Silk Building was originally built in 1908 and served as a silk factory before being converted in 1982 into luxury residences that served as home to many celebrities.
The 12-story building is located in the NoHo neighborhood and commands an entire block between Broadway and Lafayette streets.
In the 1980s, singer-actress Cher was the first star to settle into the penthouse shortly after transitioning to a residential building. Cher called the penthouse home until 1990, when she sold it to businessman and rapper Russell Simmons for $1.6 million. Over the years, the apartment also became the home of pop music princess Britney Spears.
The apartment features high ceilings, an outdoor deck with views of Greenwich Village and the Empire State Building, fireplaces, an updated kitchen, marble baths, and a wet bar in the master suite. It is for sale for $6,995,000.
