Check Mistake: Lofoten Hospital Receives 115 Million Error

CHECK THE MISTAKE: On the check given to Ressursgruppa for Lofoten Hospital, the sum was 115 million, but the bank did not intend to give quite that much. Photo: Rune Andreassen/ Lofotposten

The sum seemed too good to be true. And that was it.

Updated just now

Last week, representatives from the Sparebanken 68 degrees Nord foundation met in front of Nordlandssykehuset Lofoten. Here a check was to be handed over to the Resource Group for Lofoten Hospital.

The check for NOK 115 million surprised everyone. Including those who gave it.

The Lofoten post office mentioned the matter first.

Big typo

The large sum was a typo.

Three zeros were written too many on the cheque, and the sum should actually have been 115,000.

– It must have been a bit fast with the marker when we were going out to meet them to give the money, says Martin Nikolaisen from the foundation to The Lofoten post office.

There has been a lot of attention around the case, precisely because of the mistake. Several have noticed the large amount.

– We have only received a positive response to it. It’s almost like we have to do it every award to get the conversation going, says Nikolaisen to the local newspaper.

To VG, Nikolaisen says that he does not want to comment on the case beyond what he has said to the local newspaper, but adds that “we see anything that can help create commitment and focus on the Hospital Case as positive”.

– Violent with zeros

Eva-Karin Busch from the Resource Group for Lofoten Hospital did not discover the error until some time after the handover.

– When I got home and put the check on the sofa, I thought there was something violent with zeros, says Busch to VG.

She had not been allowed to look at the check while the photos were taken and the distribution was taking place.

– When I went on Facebook, people had already been to the newspaper and checked. I was blissfully unaware until I got home.

Busch sees the whole situation with humor. She is happy about the attention surrounding the award.

Is it valid?

But what happens now? Has Ressursgruppa actually received NOK 115 million?

No, unfortunately they don’t. Martin Nikolaisen informs that the check is not valid, even if everything else around it has been done correctly.

Nevertheless, the hospital is inflated with the sum they receive.

– Of course we would have liked to be able to offer such a large amount, but it won’t happen this time, says Nikolaisen to Lofotposten.

He finds it difficult to imagine Lofoten without a hospital, and hopes the money can help in the hospital fight.
