Earlier, Erdogan’s spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said that the Turkish government had applied for assistance in evacuating wounded soldiers at the Azovstal steel plant, Mariupol, Saturday (14/5).
The plan is that Ukrainian troops in Azovstal will be evacuated to the port of Berdyansk. Furthermore, the Turkish ship will take them to Istanbul.
“If it can be done that way, we are happy to do it. We are ready. In fact, our ships are ready to go and take wounded soldiers, and civilians to Turkey,” Kalin said, quoted by Reuters.
“The ship is still in Istanbul. It is ready to sail, but we need permission from Russia and Ukraine to go to Berdyansk and take the wounded soldiers to Turkey.”
Kalin also revealed that he had presented this idea to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky two weeks ago. The plan is still in the process of being discussed despite Moscow’s opposition.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian and Russian sides have not commented on the possibility of this evacuation.
Kadyrov is an ally of President Vladimir Putin. He sent Chechen troops to Ukraine to help with Putin’s military operations.
