Cheapest mobile subscription September 2021 – Many people should definitely switch

Every quarter, Dinside checks the prices of mobile subscriptions in Norway to find out where you get the most for your money.

In the price test, we look at subscriptions with free use of SMS and calling minutes, where we compare how much data you get for the monthly price. We do this for three different price levels – up to 200, 300 and 500 kroner, with requirements for at least 1 GB, 4 GB and 15 GB of data in the three categories, respectively, so that the lists do not become too long.

We have collected the subscriptions that do not qualify in a table at the end, so if you find your subscription there, you should definitely consider switching.

Some changes

Since we checked prices in June there have been some changes among Norwegian mobile operators. As mentioned the other day will be Skymobil customers have now moved to Fjordkraft, and it also means that both Telipol and Scoopr, which sold Skymobil subscriptions, disappear from our lists.

We have also chosen to drop MyCall from the price survey. The Telia-owned company has subscriptions aimed at people with family and friends abroad, and includes free calls to a number of other countries, for which you naturally pay extra. Therefore, it becomes somewhat unreasonable to compare prices with the “ordinary” Norwegian subscriptions where the operator necessarily comes out poorly.

As usual, we emphasize that we have looked at the prices that apply to everyone, and not at discounts if you have other products from the same company, if you are under a given age, pay for several family members and the like. We also disregard things like double data the first two months, discount if you commit 12 months and similar offers.

We checked the prices on Friday 9 September, and all prices are taken from the operators’ websites.

200 kroner (1 GB +)

We start as usual with the most affordable subscriptions. Here we require that you get at least 1 GB of mobile data for a maximum of 200 kroner a month:

As you can see, there is one operator that stands out at the top, and it is Chilimobil that gives you a full 4 GB for 199 kroner, which is the first time we see. The cheapest gigabyte, for those of you who do not need much, is Fjordkraft, with a price of 119 kroner.

There are also operators in the table that charge 199 kroner for one gigabyte, where you can get up to four times as much data from other operators. And there are also those who do not qualify, and who pass 200 kroner for the gigabyte. Subscriptions that do not qualify have been collected in the table below.

300 kroner (4 GB +)

You get significantly more for your money if you are willing to stretch a hundred bucks extra. Here are the ones that give you the most data for less than 300 kroner:

As before, it is Happybytes who reigns at the top, but who must also be marked with a star. The reason for this is that their “a lot of data” subscription is of a slightly special nature. Here you get a new gigabyte every midnight, which lasts throughout the day. Data you do not use disappears, and should you need more one day, you can pay 19 kroner for a new gigabyte, where any unused data expires at midnight again.

The advantage is that you will never have to wait longer than midnight before you have mobile data again. The downside is that you will not be able to save data, either for the rest of the month or next month (rollover). If you are the type who can go several days and use minimal data, and then clink with a few gigabytes in one day, it is not certain that this is the best subscription for you.

For the price of just 250 kroner, however, you get no more than 7-8 GB from the other operators. Happybytes also offers a 7 GB subscription for 218 kroner, but this does not have data rollovers and is therefore not included in our overview.

Many should definitely switch

As for “regular” subscriptions, Chilimobil and Release get the best out of it, with 299 kroner for 15 gigabytes.

Let it also be mentioned that Vipps, as the only operator, allows you to save up more rollover data than what is included in your subscription. Where the others, for example, allow you to save up to a maximum of 10 GB if you have a 10 GB subscription, you can save up “unlimited” (1000 GB) at Vipps.

500 kroner (15 GB +)

Strictly speaking, we could have set the list at 400 kroner here, because there are two operators that give you free computer use for 398 kroner – Happybytes and Chilimobil:

As you can see, they are both marked with an asterisk in the table, and it is to point out that you get full speed of up to 108/100 GB, before the speed is slowed down to 3 Mbps. In theory, it should still be fast enough to stream Netflix video in decent quality, so it’s something completely different than the typical 64 kbps others offer (0.064 Mbps).

In this table, Happybytes comes out best on price per gigabyte, but it may also be worth noting that the company, unlike Chilimobil, does not offer twin or computer sims on the subscription, so you have plans for an extra SIM card in a tablet or in a 4G router at the cabin, Chilimobil will probably be a better choice (99 in establishment + 39 kroner a month for extra SIM cards). Chilimobil also gives you 27 gigabytes for use in the EEA area, while the corresponding amount at Happybytes is 24 GB.

We think these two are so equal that we give them both the cheapest award.

We also have the star brand Talkmore’s subscription. This is also slowed down to 3 Mbps after the 100 gigabytes have been used up, but the speed of the 100 is also limited to 10 Mbps, so here you actually pay 100 kroner more for a subscription with lower speed.

Also note that Ice offers a “Data Freedom” service. This costs 99 kroner extra a month and can be used on subscriptions from 7 gigabytes and up. Then you get 1000 GB extra data, speed-limited at 10 Mbps, which can be used as long as you are connected to Ice’s own mobile network, ice +. Where Ice itself does not have the capacity, they rent coverage from Telia, and then you do not get to use the 1000 GB quota. So you can pay 249 + 99 = 348 kroner for 7 + 1000 GB. We think this solution is difficult to place sensibly in the table, but you see Ice ‘coverage map that they have very good ice + coverage where you mostly travel, this can be a very good offer.

Example of coverage from ice + where yellow is «very good», purple «good» and green only basic coverage.

Not qualified

As mentioned, this time we have gathered the subscriptions that did not qualify for a place in the tables in a separate table. If you find your subscription here, there will be extra good reason to change:

These subscriptions are therefore the ones that to the least degree give you what you pay for, where you can either get more data elsewhere at the same price or the same (or higher) amount of data at a lower price.

As you can see in the table, for example, Telenor charges one kroner more for 1 GB a month, than the Happybytes subscription, which gives you 1 GB each. day. And one kroner more for 8 GB than Happybytes charges for 108 GB.

Easy to change

Let us also emphasize that switching telephone subscriptions requires minimal effort. When we asked last time, one in five answered that they think it was too much trouble.

All you have to do is visit the website of the operator you want and select a subscription, fill in a form where you can also enter your existing number, and then the operator will cancel your current subscription and send you a new SIM. card with a date for when you need to replace it in your phone.

Cheapest per level

Below we have turned the tables around a bit and listed the lowest price per gigabyte level. We have deliberately dropped the levels where there are subscriptions with more data at the same or lower price. For example, the most affordable 6 GB subscription costs NOK 249, but it also costs the most affordable 8 GB subscription.

Note as mentioned that Happybytes’ 7 GB subscription for 218 kroner is not included in the table, since the subscription lacks data rollover.

Which mobile network do the operators use?

For some, it is also important which mobile network the various operators use, since the coverage can vary where you live, at the cabin or where you travel often for other reasons.
