Snapchat is launching My AI, its ChatGPT-powered chatbot, but this new feature will initially only be available to paid Snapchat Plus subscribers. CEO Evan Spiegel says this is just the start of the social network’s AI projects.
Paying Snapchat Plus subscribers in the US were surprised today to see a new conversation appear at the top of the app’s dedicated tab. This new friend is called My AI, a chatbot powered by the latest version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel tells The Verge that this is just the beginning of the social network’s AI projects.
For Evan Spiegel, this is a bet on the future: according to him, AI chatbots will be part of our daily lives and it is a question of following in the footsteps of the competition. Although initially only available to paid Snapchat Plus subscribers in the US, Snapchat says the AI is intended to be used by all of Snapchat’s 750 million monthly users eventually.
My AI, a limited ChatGPT
Currently, My AI is essentially just a mobile version of ChatGPT inside Snapchat. The main difference is that Snap’s version is, like Bing’s, more limited in its responses than OpenAI’s interface. My AI therefore does not provide responses that include insults, violence, sexually explicit content or opinions on sensitive topics such as politics.

The chatbot has also been stripped of some features that have already caused ChatGPT to be banned in some schools. For example, he politely refuses to write university dissertations. So far no major blunders have been reported, and Snapchat plans to continue improving My AI as people report inappropriate responses.
Unlike OpenAI’s ChatGPT interface, the social network doesn’t give advice on how to use My AI, which opens to a blank chat page waiting for the conversation to begin. While ChatGPT has quickly become an assistant at work, Snapchat sees its chatbot more like an everyday cyber friend. So, the profile page of My AI is similar to that of any other Snapchat user.
