OpenAI has acquired a new short domain for its chatbot ChatGPT, which is now available at chat.com.
Here’s what we know
The new chat.com address is shorter than the old chat.openai.com, which still works and automatically redirects users to the main site.
It appears that OpenAI is following the lead of Google, which had already acquired the ai.com domain for its Gemini project.
The new chat.com domain has a long history. A name like Chat.com is pretty generic, so it’s not possible to register it for $20 a year on Squarespace. It was first registered in 1996 and was bought last year by Dharmesh Shah, co-founder of Hubspot, for $15.5 million. Today, according to TechCrunchOpenAI is the new owner of the domain, although the exact amount of the purchase remains unknown.
These short, simple domains are often purchased to establish dominance in a particular industry. By becoming the owner of chat.com, OpenAI ensures its association with the term “chat” on the Internet.
