A sign that spring is upon us, icebreaking operations on the Châteauguay River should begin shortly. The Coast Guard confirmed to the Journal that the hovercraft is scheduled to begin operations on Wednesday, March 15.
“Note that plans may be subject to change depending on operational needs or emergencies,” says Émilie Proteau-Beaulieu, senior communications advisor at Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The device returns each spring to break the ice on Lake Saint-Louis and at the mouth of the Châteauguay River, as far as the Adirondack Bridge.
The amphibious excavator then continues the work started by the hovercraft in the section of the river between the Arthur-Laberge and Adirondacks bridges.
