An inmate of detention center from Châteaudun (Eure-et-Loir) died Thursday of his injuries, after being hit by a fellow prisoner with a homemade weapon, said the prosecutor’s office in Chartres.
The alleged perpetrator of the blows, aged 27 like the victim, was taken into custody at the Châteaudun gendarmerie “under the qualification of assassination”the prosecutor of the Republic of Chartres Rémi Coutin told AFP, confirming information from Republican Echo.
“The suspect used a weapon by destination made with a piece of glass, the origin of which is unknown for the moment, in order to strike the fellow prisoner. The investigation will have to determine the exact circumstances of this assassination and the causes which we have not determined at this early stage of the investigation.underlined Mr. Coutin.
A dozen convictions
The suspect had entered the Châteaudun detention center in January 2021 after a stint in the prison of Fleury-Merogis (Essonne). He was serving a one-year prison sentence imposed by the court of Bobigny for drug trafficking and a two-year prison sentence for domestic violence. His record shows a dozen convictions. He was released in 2023, according to the Chartres prosecutor.
The victim, sentenced a dozen times by the courts, had been imprisoned in Châteaudun prison since April 2021, after a sentence pronounced by the Angers court of two and a half years in prison for domestic violence, detailed Mr. Coutin.
The investigation was entrusted to the research brigade of Châteaudun and the research section of Orléans.
The murder comes almost a month after Yvan Colonna’s deadly assault on Arles Prison, where the Corsican independence activist was serving a life sentence for the 1998 assassination of Prefect Claude Erignac.
