In Chateau Meiland On Monday evening you can see how Martien, Erica and Maxime prepare for a fan day with 450 interested parties. Martien predicts in advance a King Willem-Alexander and The Beatles effect. “Do you think they’re going to scream? No,” says a sober Erica, to which Martien says firmly: “Very loud. The entire Doornspijk is shaking to the foundations because of screaming people. If that’s the case, I’m going to scream too.
Loaded with merchandise – read: scarves for 49.95 euros, laptop bags for 149 euros and discount vouchers for wine – the Meilandjes arrive in Doornspijk, where people have paid 20 euros to meet the family trio in person. Everyone wants to have their picture taken with them and then things go wrong.
“People are all getting angry,” says Maxime, who has now become red-faced from the commotion. “We have to put an end to it at some point.” Erica feels sorry for a woman who is ‘closer to crying than laughing’. “What do you think of me?!” Maxime exclaims.
Security helps the Meilandjes out of the room where they are surrounded by fans. After a group photo outside, Martien, Erica and Maxime relax. In the car, Erica says she is glad there was security. “That is really very necessary,” she concludes about their star status. “I thought it was very intense,” Maxime looks back.
Viewers feel the nerves of the Meilandjes. “Seems to me like a typical case of Once But Never Again, a fan day,” someone writes. “My goodness, the chaos,” says another stunned viewer. Others especially scream at Martien’s comparison with the Beatles. ‘What a huge self-contamination that fan day was Chateau Meiland. Matriarch Martien compares this day to the arrival of The Beatles.’
Aran Bade is also one of those present at the fan day. He reveals an inappropriate question from a fan that Erica refuses to answer during the Q&A:
