Chasing the Super Red Moon Natural Phenomenon in the Sky of Jakarta

The total lunar eclipse is being hunted by photojournalists and residents to capture this rare event from a number of locations in the capital city of Jakarta, last Wednesday (26/5/2021). This total lunar eclipse can be seen in all parts of Indonesia, this rare moment becomes even more special because it coincides with the occurrence of perigee, namely the moon is at the closest distance to the earth.

The event of a total lunar eclipse looks red due to the refraction of sunlight by the earth’s atmosphere, so this natural phenomenon is also called a super red moon or super blood moon. This phenomenon occurs because the sun, earth and moon are in a parallel position. The previous total parige lunar eclipse that was observable in Indonesia occurred on January 31, 2018, the same event that can be observed in Indonesia is expected to occur again on October 8, 2033.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the total lunar eclipse that occurred had seven phases. The first phase is the penumbra which started at 15:46 WIB and can only be observed from the Papua region. The second phase, called the initial phase, will take place at 4:44 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, and can be observed from the eastern part of Indonesia, NTT and eastern Sulawesi Island.

Hereinafter referred to as the start of the total phase, it will take place around 18.09 WIB which can be observed in all parts of Indonesia except for parts of Riau, parts of West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh. Exactly at 18.18 WIB, the eclipse entered the peak phase of a total lunar eclipse. The next phase is at 18.28 WIB, the end of the peak phase, then entering the end of the partial eclipse at 19.52 WIB. The end of the penumbra phase is the last phase that takes place at 20.51 WIB which can be seen from all parts of Indonesia.
