“At all times, the USS Chafee conducts operations in accordance with international law and custom. The United States will continue to fly, sail, and operate where international law allows,” the US Pacific Fleet continued.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the USS Chafee received a warning that it was approaching a restricted area, but instead of changing direction, it raised a colored flag to indicate the helicopter’s preparation for take-off from the deck, meaning it was impossible to change direction and speed.
