Chartres (Eure-et-Loir), flowery city, heritage city, city of light and perfume and soon… city of animals! For several years, initiatives have already been set up in the Eurelian capital, such as a canine space of 1,400 m2, with free access 365 days a year, rue des Petites-Filles-Dieu, or even houses for stray cats, real small hotels, five kibbles for sterilized tomcats or in the process of becoming so. We owe these advances to Sophie Beurel, municipal councilor in charge of animals in town, who pampers doggies, cats and other new pets (NAC).
“The test phase of these cat houses worked very well. The volunteers were and still are dynamic. “Since the end of December, ten cabins have been installed and are already running at full speed since the cats have already taken up residence there. In particular, they have been placed in the La Madeleine sector, in the Bethouart district and towards the Intermarché des 3-Ponts, at the level of the allotment gardens.
Stores where pets are welcome
“A report will also be presented at the next city council concerning a charter that will allow volunteers to obtain a feeder badge which will give them more legitimacy vis-à-vis condominium associations and people who are reluctant to feed cats. “, specifies the thirty-something. Last year, eighty cats were sterilized, in partnership with the association 30 Millions d’amis.
Stickers, which indicate the shops in the city center where animals are welcome, have also been created. But Sophie Beurel wants to go even further. “We want to create an “Animal Friendly City” label. Each municipality in the agglomeration will be able to apply for the label subject to meeting certain conditions, she explains, such as, for example, the sterilization of stray cats, or even having spaces of freedom, in particular for dogs… On this last point, moreover, the city of Chartres is continuing its efforts. “On the green plan, because it is a place for walking. »
A blessing in front of the planned cathedral
A “Day of animals in town” should also take place on Saturday April 29, place des Halles. “The cohabitation between residents and animals is possible. Exhibitors will be present, canine demonstrations will be organized with, in particular, dog brigades, an information stand on the adoption of an animal will be set up and veterinarians will be present.
But this year’s slightly crazy idea could indeed be the blessing of animals. “It was something that was practiced in the church of Sainte-Rita, in Paris, the day of Saint Francis of Assisi. I thought it was remarkable to do that in Chartres, in front of our magnificent cathedral. » Parrot, rabbit, or any other exotic animal…, all companions will be welcome to receive the grace, most likely given by someone from the diocese.
