Chartres: the Cavalcade company leaves for the Avignon festival

“It’s like coming back to life”. Sylvia Brouillard, actress and playwright for the Cavalcade company, does not have enough strong words to describe her next artistic adventure at the Avignon festival. Like the entire performing arts sector, the Chartres organization has lived almost a year and a half without being able to perform on stage.

Already a big success in 2019

In the meantime, the troupe was able to complete, at the end of last week, a creation residency at the theater of Bures-sur-Yvette (Essonne), to give substance to its new creation: Bienvenue au bel Automne, a comedy about a rather heavy subject: the living conditions of the elderly in retirement homes.

In Eure-et-Loir, how the cultural world struggles not to die

But in Avignon, the company will resume another show with a lighter configuration, End of service.
From July 7 to 31, Sylvia Brouillard and Delry Guyon will transform the Salle de la Luna into an opulent seaside villa, where a rich, idle woman “clashes” with her short-lived servant. This creation, already presented in Avignon in 2019, had been a big success, with many programming dates to the key. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus crisis, all of these appointments had to be postponed or even canceled.

“We are not going to give up”

It was therefore necessary to start from the beginning. Sylvia Brouillard admits with a touch of concern, the conditions for this return are not optimal.
“We don’t know at all how it’s going to turn out. The gauge, normally, should be reduced to 65% of its capacity. I don’t know at all if the public will want to come back to theaters, it’s the unknown. I hope for a nice surprise ”.

The cultural actors of Eure-et-Loir pending: “We must bounce back, because otherwise we would go crazy”

By going to Avignon, the Cavalcade company knows that it is taking a significant financial risk, in particular because of the smaller number of spectators.
“We have to go, we absolutely have to get back to work. Usually, we know that when we go to Avignon, we lose money, because it is a big investment. But we make up for it when our shows are spotted by the programmers and tour all over France. This year, we know we will lose even more. But too bad, we take the risk. Are we not going to give up ?! “.
