Chartres Mayor Inaugurates Sports and Leisure Area in La Madeleine District – State-supported Revitalization Program

Jean-Pierre Gorges, mayor of Chartres, inaugurated a sports and leisure area in the heart of the La Madeleine district. “This is an important first brick for the renovation of the district,” he declared, referring to the redevelopment of the northeast plateau. The mayor also recalled that this project will be “supported by the State in a regional revitalization program among 42 other cities”.

Creation of 170 housing units

The inauguration took place in front of around sixty people including several municipal councilors. “We will reorganize the green spaces and create 170 housing units, 30% of which will be social housing,” underlined the mayor, specifying that “the avenue of trees will be maintained as long as possible.” Around ten environmental activists, accompanied by the opposition municipal councilor, Jean-François Bridet, came, with banners, to show their opposition to the project.

For the demonstrators, “residents are losers and developers are winners”.

When questioned, the mayor argued that “residents are asking for this change to experience better living conditions.”
