Chartres – All about the cathedral

Embodied by eight lecturer guides from the cathedral, a new cycle entitled “Notre-Dame de Chartres, an unsuspected cathedral” is starting.

The four visits, for two voices and lasting an hour and a half, alternate visits to the cathedral and indoor screenings. Here is the program :

Linguistic trip to the cathedral, today and Tuesday. Many expressions – to weep like a Magdalene, to carry one’s cross – have their origin in the universe of the Bible. Many others – such as paying in cash, cold hard coins, taxable and extortionate – also come from the medieval secular world.

Clothing in the Middle Ages, Sunday 19 and Tuesday 21 March. Clothing has been a marker of social order since antiquity: short clothes for the working classes, long clothes for the upper classes. It should be noted that several stained glass windows in the cathedral were donated by drapers and furriers.

The weather in Chartres Cathedral, Sunday 26 and Tuesday 28 March. There are five zodiacs in the cathedral, in the statuary and the stained glass windows. From Emperor Constantine, the Church imposed its vision of time. Astrolabic clocks made it possible to situate in liturgical time the feasts which vary according to the cycle of the Moon.

La Croix, Sunday 2 and Tuesday 4 April. The symbol of the cross evolved over the centuries to serve the message that theologians wanted to develop: from a cross of torture to a cross of glory.

Convenient. The talks (each given twice) are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. By reservation, with the Visits Department: 02.37.21.75.02 and visits.cathedrale@diocesechartres.org. Price: €12 per conference. Meeting point and ticket office at La crypte store, at the back of the cathedral
