On November 5, 1983, Charly García released Clics Modernos, one of the most impressive albums of his career and an emblem of national rock history. Those songs were inspired by New York City. For this reason, 40 years later, the musician will have his own corner in Manhattan. The “Charly Garcia corner”.

It is the intersection of Walker Street and Cortlandt Alley. where Charly took the photo that portrays the cover of the album that has songs like “I’m not a stranger”, “They won’t let me out”, “The dinosaurs” and “They keep hitting us from below”.

The idea and campaign of recognition of the Argentine artist was promoted by Mariano Cabrera, another Argentine, who has been living in Manhattan for several years and who, as he told Radio 2 this Saturday, was during the quarantine that began with the search for the specific corner of the big city where Garcia had been photographed. “Knowing that the representation of Argentine music lives or beats in a corner of Charly’s second city, because he loves New York City, is a satisfaction“, the actor pointed out.

Regarding how he managed to find the corner, Cabrera mentioned that it happened due to a succession of coincidences or causalities, links that led him to Argentine journalists and photographers who were connected and transmitted the information they had on the exact moment everything happened.

The original wall, where the graffiti was, was painted, and it belongs to a building where a hotel currently operates, whose main chef is the Argentine Fernando Trocca. The tribute ceremony will take place on November 6, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the album’s release. A plaque will be placed there and since then Charly’s legacy will endure in the streets of New York.

The story according to the protagonist

“I didn’t travel to make a record. But in that place, everything inspired. I liked the energy and I wanted to compose and get together with some musicians to do something”, the musician said in an interview. Settled in New York, he dedicated himself to delving into the Big Apple music scene and buying equipment to make his next record. When the concept was ready, he chose the title and called Uberto Sagramoso, his historic photographer, to photograph him somewhere in Manhattan.

“The idea was to write with spray on a wall, “Nuevos Trapos”, that’s what the album was going to be called,” García clarified in a note. But an image of a black silhouette – painted by Canadian graffiti artist Richard Hambleton – reminded him of the images disseminated by the Grandmothers and Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo about the disappeared.

Next to this silhouette was a “Modern Clix” message. I thought it was perfect, my idea to spray New Rags was lost right then and there.”Charlie remembered. Since then everything made sense and the album was reflected as a turn in the history of rock.
