Dariana González Aguilar, a student at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, was accepted to Harvard University, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Harvard University is known as one of the best universities in America. In addition, it is part of the Ivy League, a set of eight universities with connotations of academic excellence and selectivity in admissions.
González Aguilar will join the group of students who they will graduate in 2025. The student will study environmental science and public policy and then work to create legislation to combat the climate crisis.
“Most, if not, all of the people I know who attended Harvard are some of the brilliant, but also humble, people that I have met,” Aguilar said. “They are people who are not afraid to advocate for the problems facing their communities.”
González Aguilar moved from Guanajuato, Mexico with his parents, Dario and Rafaela, when he was only three years old. Now, her parents are very proud of her for achieving the American dream.
Bank of America Student Leaders
As part of her experience before being accepted to Harvard, González Aguilar worked as an intern with Bank of America Student Leaders during the summer of 2020.
Due to the pandemic, González Aguilar had to participate in the internship in a virtual way. He learned about some topics such as leadership, civic engagement, and job skills development.
Bank of America hosted five Charlotte student leaders online despite the pandemic and engaged them in a project working with YWCA Central Carolinas. They developed a racial equity curriculum and diversity training for youth and their families.
