Ben Bender scored in stoppage time in the first half, Derrick Jones did the same in stoppage time in the second, and Charlotte FC beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 on Saturday.
Bender, the top pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, scored his third goal for Charlotte after controlling a pass from Christian Ortiz in the fourth minute of stoppage time in the first half. His other two goals had been penalties.
Charlotte’s second goal didn’t come until the first minute of injury time in the second half, when Jones managed to score for the only time this season.
Charlotte reached 19 points, to place herself in sixth place in the Eastern Conference and in the playoff zone. The Red Bulls stalled at 23 points, fourth in the conference, on goal difference to Montreal, which is third.
