Charlize Theron says she was belittled by a male director who forced her to participate in more wardrobe rehearsals

Charlize Theron said she was once forced to participate in multiple wardrobe rehearsals by a male director, adding that it was “so obvious it had to do with my sexuality and how much they could get me fucked.”

Theron, 47, shared her experience in an interview with Leah Chernikoff of Harper’s Bazaar, released Thursday. The “Mad Max” actress told the outlet that “having absolutely no control over what you wear is something that has really bothered me for years.”

“For a guy to force you to audition almost in front of them, stuff like that, it’s really humiliating,” he continued. “When I started, there was no conversation about it. It was like, ‘This is what you wear.'”

Theron then recalled a case in which a male director forced her to do several wardrobe tests.

“I remember one movie in particular, where the director kept putting me in the role, over and over … And it was so obvious it had to do with my sexuality and how fucked up I could be in the film,” Theron said. “And when I started, it was normal.”

Theron did not specify which film or director the incident was about.

In the interview, Theron said having more wardrobe and makeup autonomy was part of the reason she created her own production company, Denver & Delilah.

“There is a natural struggle in me to want to create environments that resemble the ones I wish I had 30 years ago when I started,” he told the outlet.

Theron had already talked about her discomfort on sets.

In February 2022, it was reported that Theron had a hard time on set with Tom Hardy while filming “Mad Max: Fury Road”. According to “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road”, Theron was accompanied by a producer to the set because she didn’t feel safe after a fight with Hardy.

“It got to a point where it got out of hand and I got the feeling that sending a production company could be worth something, because I didn’t feel safe,” he said.
