The video was auctioned as a ‘non-fungible token’ (NFT). The new owner thus has a unique digital ownership certificate, which means that the digital object can no longer be copied or downloaded by everyone.
In the less than 1 minute long video, Harry is bitten on the finger by younger brother Charlie. At the time, the brothers’ father only put the video online to share with their grandfather. The video is one of the first viral videos on YouTube and has been viewed hundreds of millions of times. In fact, in 2009 it was the most watched video on YouTube ever with 130,000,000 views.
It is still unclear whether the buyer can upload the video again. If allowed, the owner can earn a considerable sum of money from advertising income, provided that a lot of people watch the video again.
