Do you remember “Charlie bit me !” (“Charlie m’a mordu“), one of the first humorous videos published on the Internet, in 2007, showing a young child being bitten by his finger by his little brother? In those fifty-five seconds for posterity, a young British boy named Harry puts his index finger in Charlie’s mouth who logically bites him. Harry gives us two lines: “Ouch charlie“and”Charlie, it really hurt me“, which causes Charlie’s hilarity.

Viewed over 880 million times on YouTube, this video has been sold as non fongible token (NFT) by the Davies-Carr family at auction. One of the peculiarities of the sale is that the family decided to remove the video from YouTube after the transaction was completed, thereby increasing its value. The purchaser paid 761,000 dollars (623,000 euros) to obtain the NFT and the certificate of authenticity attached to it.

But eventually, Charlie and Harry’s video will stay on YouTube. “After the auction, we contacted the buyer, who ultimately decided to keep the video on YouTube., the father told Quartz. The buyer felt the video was an important part of popular culture and should not be removedOn the other hand, the video has been duplicated thousands of times by other accounts, and its disappearance from the web seemed fanciful even before the sale. Some will see in this event a consecration of the absurdity and chaos that reign supreme in the NFT market, with initial promises not even being honored.

Charlie bit me !“is obviously not the first even to have been exchanged for an insane amount since the NFT plagues the Web. Recently, the photograph of Disaster Girl – yes, you know, the little girl who wears an evil smile in front of a burning house – sold in NFT format for $ 430,000. Note that in both cases it is the same buyer, the latter responding to the nickname @ 3fmusic.
