The PGA Tour heads to the historic Colonial Country Club this week for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge, and a loaded field of post-majors will be on hand. The event in Fort Worth, Texas is the non-major tournament to be played at the same field every year. The track was designed by Perry Maxwell, the same architect who created Southern Hills, home of last week’s PGA Championship. Justin Thomas beat Will Zalatoris in a tiebreaker to win the major championship last week in Tulsa, and both are scheduled to compete this week. Other stars on the field include Dallas native Jordan Spieth, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and two-time major champion Collin Morikawa. Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, as a 10-1 favorite in the latest betting odds for golf’s 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge. Two-time PGA champion Thomas and three-time major winner Spieth », are priced at 12-1. Morikawa (15-1) and Zalatoris (20-1) are also among the top contenders in the 2022 Charles Schwab field, while defending champion Jason Kokrak is a long bet at 40-1.
Can Scheffler bounce back after missing the cut last week and be worth the premium you’ll pay to have him among your 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge fantasy golf picks? Would a young star like Viktor Hovland (20-1) or Sam Burns (28-1) give him more flexibility in building his roster and a better chance of winning? Before pinning any fantasy golf standings or placing any bets on the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge, be sure to check out the fantasy golf projections and betting tips from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.
Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a number of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a deep understanding of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the field and in fantasy sports.
On the PGA, Gates had both Thomas and Zalatoris, who was 30-1, among his top five picks. “He has smoothed things over at the Byron Nelson and will attack the PGA,” Gates said of Thomas. The result? Thomas came back from six shots down on Sunday and beat Zalatoris in a playoff to win his second PGA Championship.
The week before, at the Wells Fargo Championship, Gates was very active, with four of his top six players finishing in the top five. Among them, the winner, Max Homa, with a share of 40-1, and the runners-up, Keegan Bradley (35-1) and Matt Fitzpatrick (22-1).
Gates has been on a roll all season. He matched Jon Rahm as the winner at the Mexican Open, and eight of his 20 picks finished in the top eight at the Masters. He nailed his picks at the Sentry, where four of his best seven picks finished in the top five, and he repeated the result at the Hero World Challenge. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up there.
Now, Gates has ranked his top golfers for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge (view entries on StubHub), and you’ll really want to see what he has to say. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and his picks for the Charles Schwab Challenge on SportsLine.
2022 Charles Schwab Challenge golf picks expertos
Gates is banking on Zalatoris this week after the 25-year-old asserted the expert’s faith in him last week. Zalatoris reined in his errant putt at Southern Hills, ranking 10th on the course in strokes gained on greens. This, coupled with one of the best games from tee to green in the world, almost gave him his first victory on the circuit, no less than in a major. Gates expects the former Korn Ferry star to lift a trophy this week, and his stats point to success at Colonial. Zalatoris is fifth in greens in regulation (70.65%) and leads the circuit in shots gained from tee to green.
On the other hand, Spieth’s numbers do not inspire confidence, and the pundit barely places him in his top 10. The 28-year-old has had success at Colonial, but his season hasn’t been too impressive overall. “You never know for sure which Spieth you’re going to get,” says Gates. Spieth has one win and one runner-up finish in the past three weeks, but tied for 34th at Tulsa. He has struggled to put his drives on the fairway (126th in accuracy) and has been worse on the greens (177th in putts earned). He loves the field, but he could have problems this week.
