Charles Martinet’s Last Appearance as Mario Confirmed in Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Switch

Ever since it was revealed last summer that he wouldn’t be voicing Mario anymore, and in fact, we wouldn’t be hearing his voice in the blockbuster Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Mario’s new voice is Kevin Afghani), fans have been Wonder if Charles Martinet appears one last time in the game as the mustachioed plumber, if it hasn’t already happened.
Through recent footage, demos, and press impressions of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, these fans are starting to recognize his voice in the Switch game, which launches today, and with this release, Charles Martinet’s presence in the title It’s fully confirmed in the credits. As proof, here’s a screenshot where you can see Martinet above Peach/Toad’s Sam Kelly:

It’s worth mentioning that the original Game Boy Advance version, which came out in 2004 (20 years ago), already recycled many of the iconic sounds Martinet recorded for his first game character, Mario, in 1996’s Super Mario 64. However, if we compare the GBA game with the new remaster for Switch, it’s clear that Nintendo used other, higher quality recordings this time around, including some replacements. This doesn’t mean the cast will be delivering new material, by any means – it seems more like another trip to the archives to complete a remastered production.
Regardless, it definitely looks like something that was done before last year’s announcement and Wonder’s arrival. In other words, unless Nintendo keeps another project in the drawer, we’re about to witness Charles Martinet’s swan song in this universe after his famous cameo last year in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The fact that this comes alongside the Super Mario 64 expression that became legendary adds a nostalgic flair to the whole thing.

If you want to hear Martinet one last time, don’t miss our Mario vs. Donkey Kong review and all the gameplay we post.
