Charles Jaigu: “Russia-Europe, story of a catastrophe”

CHRONICLE – Historian Georges-Henri Soutou brilliantly unravels the causes of the rupture between Moscow and the West since 1989. And it is not just Putin‘s fault.

General Winter will soon appear between kyiv and Moscow, which will not fail to slow down a war which is seeking an emergency exit, at a time when a new American president is about to enter the White House. These are two good reasons to return to this major crisis. To better gauge the most probable developments in this conflict, it is very useful to tackle the difficult task of reconstructing the history of relations between Russia and the West since the collapse of the Soviet worlds.

Georges-Henri Soutou, an 81-year-old veteran historian, once wrote a classic entitled The Fifty Years War, East-West relations from 1943 to 1990. Here he offers us the sad continuation of this relationship which looked promising. Reconciliation was failed, and the rupture is perhaps even more serious than in 1917.
