Charles Bronson’s Bet with Sergio Leone and Henry Fonda’s Role in Once Upon a Time in the West

Actor Charles Bronson made a bet with film director Sergio Leone over a case of whiskey that Henry Fonda would not accept the role of Frank. However, Fonda read the script several times before picking up the phone and calling Leone to say he was accepting.

Who doesn’t know Sergio Leone’s legendary western Once Upon a Time in the West, which was partially filmed in Monument Valley and where a revenge story becomes an epic meditation on the past of the Wild West.

In order to acquire the land on which he is to lead the main thrust, lame railroad baron Morton hires hitmen led by the sadistic, forgetful-eyed Frank played by Henry Fonda, who murders landowner Brett McBain and his entire family. However, McBain’s new wife, Jill (Claudia Cardinale), arrives unexpectedly and inherits the land. Desperate Cheyenne and the mysterious outlaw Harmonica, portrayed by the unforgettable Charles Bronson, decide to take Jill under their protective wings and thwart Frank’s plans to get her inheritance. However, as time goes on, it becomes clear that Harmonika wants to get Frank for another reason… one that has to do with death.

So much for a brief annotation of the famous film from 1968, which was underlined by the evocative music of Ennio Morricone. And it is the famous soundtracks of this Italian creator that Nikola Bojčev will focus on in the next episode of the program Music of the Silver Screen.

The premiere is set for Wednesday, January 3, 2024 2023 at 7 p.m., listen to repeats on Sunday, January 7 at 11 a.m. and Monday, January 8 at 10 p.m.
